Invertebrate survey work sits at the heart of what we do. From initial scoping through to detailed species-level assessment, we deliver survey programmes that are proportionate to the site, the habitat and the regulatory context — producing robust, defensible outputs for planning, appraisal and conservation. Our network of trusted expert entomologists means we can draw on the right specialism for every project, without the client needing to look elsewhere.
Scoping Assessments
A scoping assessment establishes whether a site has the habitat character and connectivity to support invertebrates of interest, and whether further survey work is warranted. Drawing on desk-based habitat appraisal and, where appropriate, a rapid field visit, we provide a clear, proportionate recommendation that gives clients and their ecologists a confident starting point — avoiding unnecessary survey expenditure while ensuring nothing of significance is overlooked.
Detailed Invertebrate Surveys
Where scoping identifies habitat of sufficient quality or sensitivity, detailed surveys characterise the invertebrate assemblage at species level across the full range of relevant terrestrial habitats. Survey design follows current best practice guidance and is tailored to the site, the season and the question being asked. Outputs are suitable for use in planning applications, Environmental Impact Assessments and ecological appraisal, underpinned by accurate in-house identification across multiple invertebrate orders.
Species-Specific Surveys
Some projects require a focused assessment of particular species or groups — whether driven by planning requirements, conservation obligations, or the presence of habitat with clear potential for species of concern. We design and deliver surveys targeted at Section 41 species, IUCN Red List taxa and species with a nationally contracted range, interpreting results against the relevant legislative and policy framework. A long-standing focus on the targeted recording of rare and scarce Diptera means this strand of our work is grounded in genuine field experience with some of Britain’s most demanding invertebrate groups.
BNG Baseline Surveys & Monitoring
Robust invertebrate data strengthens biodiversity net gain assessments and provides the evidence base for meaningful habitat enhancement. We carry out baseline surveys proportionate to site size and habitat complexity, producing outputs compatible with BNG reporting requirements. Where longer-term monitoring is needed to demonstrate measurable gain, we design and deliver repeat survey programmes that track assemblage change over time and provide defensible evidence of ecological outcome.
